Fostering Empathy and Compassion in the World

Check out our newest fortnightly editorial in the Gladstone Today (23rd November 2023).

In an age where self-interest often takes centre stage and we see more and more disturbing events across the globe, we need to do our bit to bring about positive and transformative changes; and one way of doing that is by volunteering in our local communities.

Volunteering has emerged as a catalyst for building empathy and compassion. It provides you with firsthand experiences, allows you to interact with all different types of people who are often facing their own challenges and adversity, fostering a deeper understanding of each other’s struggles. Susan Johnson, a volunteer at a local homeless shelter, shares her experience, “It’s one thing to read about homelessness, but it’s entirely different to sit down, share a meal and hear their stories. It opens your heart and mind in ways you can’t imagine.”

Volunteering gives you the opportunity to be involved hands-on in addressing societal issues. Maria Rodriguez, who volunteers at an animal shelter, remarks that “Caring for abandoned animals has made me more compassionate not only towards them but also towards people dealing with difficult circumstances. It’s a ripple effect.”

Whether it’s assisting by tutoring underprivileged children or caring for the elderly, the act of giving is a powerful force that transforms individuals and consequently, communities.
