Managing Disappointment in Grant Application Rejections: A Guide for Community Organisations

Facing rejection in grant applications can be a disheartening experience for any community organisation. The effort, passion and hopes invested in crafting a proposal can make the disappointment particularly intense, however navigating this setback with resilience and strategy is essential for future success.

1. Firstly, it’s important to allow yourself and your team space to process the disappointment. Acknowledging the hard work put into it and the emotions tied to the outcome. Remembering that many successful organisations have faced numerous rejections before securing funding.
2. Next, seek feedback from the funding body. Constructive criticism can offer invaluable insights which can be incorporated into future applications.
3. Use this opportunity to reassess and refine your approach. Revisit your project goals, budget and impact metrics. Ensure they align closely with the funder’s priorities and criteria. Additionally, diversify your funding sources, relying on grants can be risky and not sustainable.
