It’s getting harder and harder to find people to commit to being president, secretary, and treasurer in not for profit organisations! Try these tips to fill your positions.
- Create several roles to share the load
Split up responsibilities between as many people as possible. Whilst one person may need to hold the identified positions as per the constitution, add in extra roles such as volunteer coordinator, communications, marketing, membership, social, apparel, sponsorship, fundraising, match day coordinator… The list could be endless!
- Write down what each role does
Before you start recruiting write a list of what each Management Committee member is responsible for – this helps potential people understand that it’s not a big scary role!
- Engage current members
Tap into your existing network. Often, dedicated, and passionate people are already involved but just need to be asked and encouraged.
- Aim for diversity
Challenge yourself to seek out people with different backgrounds, skills, and experiences. This can be hard at first but brings fresh ideas and a broader range of expertise.
- Collaborate with other organisations
Partner with similar groups to share opportunities and candidates.
- Network and attend events
Attend conferences, workshops, and networking events because they’re excellent opportunities to meet potential members.
- Provide support and succession planning
Provide orientation sessions, mentorship, and support with overlapping between years such as president “elect” roles where they shadow the existing people before taking over. Continuously build a pipeline of the next people coming through.
- Recognise and appreciate
Recognise contributions through verbal acknowledgements, awards, vouchers and public acknowledgements at events, in newsletters and online.
Remember that the success of your organisation depends on the commitment and expertise of your Management Committee so invest time and effort into the recruitment process to find people who are passionate and have the skills and dedication to help your organisation thrive.
