Queenslanders Urged to Lend a Hand as Volunteer Hours Hit 720 Million

Queenslanders contributed more than 720 million hours of unpaid work to their communities in 2023, new figures show, underscoring the vital role of volunteers in keeping services and support programs running across the state.

Community leaders say volunteering need not be a full-time commitment. With opportunities ranging from mentoring young people to assisting with events or providing administrative support, even an hour a week can have a meaningful impact. This doesn’t mean you are committed every week – just pick up a one off task to give a few things a try.

Volunteering delivers benefits well beyond the communities being served. Studies consistently show that those who volunteer experience higher levels of wellbeing, stronger social connections, and a greater sense of purpose. Many also develop new skills and professional networks that can assist with employment or career changes.

“Every hour counts,” a sector spokesperson said. “Volunteers are often the hidden workforce behind many essential services, and their contribution builds stronger, more resilient communities. At the same time, volunteering can be incredibly rewarding on a personal level.”
