Who supports the organisations that hold our communities together?
Community organisations are often the quiet backbone of regional communities like ours. Most people see the sports happening, keeping young people engaged, the events happening to go to at the weekends, the food support to families doing it tough, the peer networks supporting people with mental health issues. What is less visible are the small organisations and volunteers working behind the scenes to make it all possible.
These organisations operate on limited funding and volunteers, only staying afloat because of the dedicated community members who step up because they care. Many organisations are close to closure, with declining volunteers and increased costs and compliance requirements.
As these organisations disappear, the impacts will be felt, and arguably are already being felt through stretched social cohesion, conflict, lonliness and mental health issues we see across society. Community groups provide early support and local connection that prevents problems from escalating.
Strengthening the sustainability of community organisations is not simply about helping charities, it’s about protecting the resilience of our communities. Supporting governance, volunteer capacity and organisational capability ensures that these groups can continue to operate effectively. The return is not only financial, it’s in wellbeing, participation and the collective strength of the place we call home.
